Blue Balls

Ever had “blue balls”? Blue balls is a slang term for aching or painful testicles, that occurs after sexual arousal where you didn’t cum.

For those who are merely exaggerating (“oh! The pain of it all.”) it’s an expression that every man will understand. But, for some it is a physical condition. These symptoms happen when blood builds up in the testes during arousal, if aroused for an extended period of time this state may cause discomfort or pain. Blue balls may be uncomfortable, but is shouldn’t last long.

Blue balls or epididymal hypertension

So, if you’re a male who is aroused and doesn’t get off, a temporary accumulation of blood in the testicles may cause discomfort.
The signs and symptoms of blue balls include:
• A feeling of weightiness in the testes;
• Aching, discomfort or dull pain;
• a faint blue tint (it’s the blood).

The arteries that carry blood to the male genitals expand, boosting blood-flow on arousal. A restriction of the veins restricts the flow causing an erection.
Post ejaculation or de-arousal the blood vessels, penis and testicles return to their normal size.

Most men can ease blue balls by ejaculating or thinking of a non-arousing activity.

Anyone who experiences severe or long-lasting pain in the testicles should seek medical attention.  If you are experiencing testicular pain it may be a sign of something more serious, for example:

  • Kidney Stones - May cause pain in the groin or testicles. With symptoms such as burning sensations during urination, blood in urine and nausea and vomiting.
  • Testicular Torsion - Occurs when the spermatic cord that holds the testicles becomes twisted. It’s extremely painful, as it causes blood flow to the testicles. Call an ambulance, this is a medical emergency and will require surgery to untwist the spermatic cord. Symptoms include extreme pain in the scrotum, usually on one side, one testicle becoming larger, the scrotum becoming red or darker and the feeling of nausea or vomiting.
  • Epididymitis - Occurs when the conduit behind the testicles, called the epididymis, develops swelling. The cause, may be a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or a urinary tract infection (UTI). The symptoms include sensitivity, pain, swelling or inflammation in the scrotum, a fever or a burning sensation whilst urinating. See your health professional a prescription may be needed.
  • Varicocele - Are comparable to varicose veins, but they occur around the testicles. They do not usually cause any serious issues, but they may cause the testes to ache or impact male fertility.
  •  Oh *&*$%! - A sports injury or groin impact may cause pain, swelling and or bruising. These can often be treated with a pain killer and a bit of rest. More serious injuries should be treated by a medical specialist.
